Mountain Cabins

In short Mountain Cabins is Deserved's shortlist of three alpine houses: above Alta Badia in the Dolomites, facing the Matterhorn in Zermatt and under Mont Blanc in Chamonix. A mountain cabin is booked for a season, not only a place — for winter 2026/27, Alta Badia's lifts run from 4 December to 4 April, and in Chamonix the Aiguille du Midi cable car is shut for maintenance until 18 December.

Larch, stone and a fire that never goes out. Alpine cabins for the season of wool socks and long dinners — with the mountains framed in every window.

A cabin is booked for a season, not only a place

The house is the same all year; what surrounds it is not. Every valley in this edit has weeks each spring and autumn when most of its lifts stand still, and the photographs that sold the chalet were taken in the months on either side. Our own tagline for this collection promises first snow — and in Chamonix, the early-winter weeks are exactly when the valley's best-known cable car, up to the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 m, is closed for maintenance: in 2026 from 2 November to 18 December. If that ride is the reason you chose the valley, the date matters more than the chalet.
Five questions separate a mountain house that works in winter from one that only looks as if it does:
  • The lift date, not the snow date. Snow can arrive weeks before the season does. The holiday starts when the lifts run — check the published opening, not the forecast.
  • What ski-in means on your dates. A house at the edge of a piste is only ski-in once that particular piste is open. Ask whether the run to the door opens with the rest of the area.
  • What kind of fire. A wood fire, a gas insert and a bioethanol burner all photograph as a fireplace. Ask which it is, and whether the wood is supplied.
  • How long the sauna or tub takes to heat. A wood-fired tub can take hours. Ask whether it is warm when you arrive or whether you light it yourself.
  • The last kilometre in winter. Whether the road is cleared, whether you need chains — and in Zermatt, that no car goes up the valley at all.

The honest calendar for winter 2026/27

The three houses in this edit sit in three countries and three lift systems, and their seasons do not line up. These are the dates the lift operators and tourist boards published by late September 2026. All of them depend on snow, and where a date has not been published yet, we say so rather than guess.
WhereWinter 2026/27What it means for your dates
Alta Badia, Dolomites (Italy)4 December 2026 to 4 April 202754 lifts and 130 km of piste between 1,300 and 2,800 m, linked to the 1,200 km of Dolomiti Superski. The season starts a week after the first areas in Zermatt and Chamonix, and ends in early April.
Zermatt (Switzerland)Winter season 1 November 2026 to 3 May 2027; Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat from 28 NovemberThe village ski areas close earlier — Sunnegga-Rothorn on 11 April, Gornergrat on 18 April 2027. The glacier runs on: the operator sells summer ski passes from May to the end of October, so skiing in Zermatt has no gap, even when the lower mountain does.
Chamonix (France)First ski areas from 28 November 2026; valley-wide closing date not yet publishedThe Aiguille du Midi cable car is closed from 2 November to 18 December 2026. In Haute-Savoie, Chamonix's département, winter tyres marked 3PMSF or chains or snow socks are compulsory in the designated mountain zones from 1 November to 31 March; tyres marked only M+S no longer count.

How this edit is chosen

We do not count stars and we do not fill the page. A house enters this collection when the mountain is in the window rather than only nearby, when the fire is real and lit, and when the practical side of winter — the boot room, the road, the walk from the lift — has been thought about as carefully as the view. Three currently meet all of that. We would rather show you three houses and the dates that make them worth it than a longer list of chalets you would have to check yourself.
If it is the light rather than the snow — the sky behind the Matterhorn going gold, then silver, then dark — Golden Hour collects the stays chosen for the end of the day, including two of these chalets. If you are drawn to larch, stone and restraint more than to the mountain itself, Quiet Luxury is the calmer cut across every destination. And the map shows every stay by country before you choose.

Common questions

Which stays are in Mountain Cabins?

This collection currently holds 3 stays: The Larch Chalet, Almhof, Chalet Blanche. Every one is picked by hand — we would rather show you three places worth booking than thirty that fill a page.

What do stays in Mountain Cabins cost?

Nightly rates in this collection start at around €380 and reach about €780, depending on the house, the season and the room. Those are orientation figures rather than live rates — check dates with our booking partner for what you would actually pay.

Who is Mountain Cabins for?

Mountain Cabins is Deserved's shortlist of three alpine houses: above Alta Badia in the Dolomites, facing the Matterhorn in Zermatt and under Mont Blanc in Chamonix. A mountain cabin is booked for a season, not only a place — for winter 2026/27, Alta Badia's lifts run from 4 December to 4 April, and in Chamonix the Aiguille du Midi cable car is shut for maintenance until 18 December.

Are the cabins only worth it in winter?

The edit is curated for the cold season — early dusk, deep snow, a fire that earns its keep. But the same valleys trade snow for hiking trails in summer, the nights stay cool enough for the fireplace, and the view from the window is the one thing that never takes a season off. If you love the mountains more than the snow, summer is the quiet way in.

When do the lifts open for winter 2026/27?

In the three valleys of this edit, it differs by up to a month. Alta Badia publishes its ski season as 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. Zermatt's winter season formally starts on 1 November 2026, but the village ski areas of Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat open on 28 November; before that, skiing means the glacier. In Chamonix, France Montagnes lists 28 November 2026 as the opening date. All dates are subject to snow — the table further down this page sets them side by side.

Can I drive to a chalet in Zermatt?

No. Zermatt is car-free: private cars go as far as Täsch, five kilometres down the valley, and from there a shuttle train runs every 20 minutes and takes 12 minutes into the village. Luggage can be checked in with the Swiss railways and collected in Zermatt, and within the village you move by electric taxi, free e-bus or on foot. Ask the chalet how you reach the door from the station — in a car-free village, that last few hundred metres is the part the listing rarely shows.

Is November a good month for a mountain cabin?

Only if you want the house more than the mountain. November sits between the summer lifts closing and the winter lifts opening: in Chamonix, the Aiguille du Midi cable car is shut from 2 November to 18 December 2026 for its annual maintenance, and in Alta Badia the ski season has not yet begun. The exception is Zermatt, where the glacier ski area keeps running through the gap. A quiet week by the fire can be exactly right in November — just do not book it expecting the valley to be open.
