First Light

In short First Light is Deserved's shortlist for the half hour before a place wakes up — when the mist still sits in the valley, the pools are empty and the terrace belongs to you and one cup of coffee. Every stay in this edit is chosen for what it looks like at dawn, not at noon.

Golden Hour has a quieter twin. Before the pools fill and the terraces wake, there is a half hour when the light is thin and cool, the mist still sits in the valley, and the whole place belongs to you and one cup of coffee. This is our shortlist for that hour — a canopy pool as the morning fog lifts off the gorge in Ubud, a teak deck in Chiang Mai with the valley still white below, breakfast arriving by canoe in Bora Bora while the peak catches the first light, a rainforest house in Costa Rica where the howler monkeys start the day for you, a Copenhagen atelier and a house bike along the canal, a Maldivian ladder and a swim before anyone else is up. Six stays chosen for one thing: the moment the day begins slowly, and only for you. Set no alarm you have to obey — just wake with the light.

Why the first hour looks different in each place

A stay chosen for the morning is chosen for what stands between you and the sunrise. At sea there is nothing, so the light arrives on schedule and all at once. In a valley or a gorge, a ridge is the horizon, and that delay is what lets the mist sit a little longer. The six houses in this edit split along exactly that line.
  • Valley and gorge mornings. Canopy Villa stands above the Petanu river gorge, where the sun has to clear the rim before it reaches the water, and The Teak House looks out over layered hills with the valley still white below. Here the best of the morning is the time between first light and the sun arriving, when everything is grey-green and the mist has not yet lifted.
  • The forest waking up. The Rainforest House faces west to the Pacific, so the sun rises behind it. The light reaches the treetops — and the pool among them — before it reaches the beach. The morning here is something you hear before you see it.
  • Lagoon mornings. The Lagoon Villa sits over a flat sea, so sunrise comes exactly when the table says and the colour is gone fast — a swim off the ladder in the first ten minutes is the whole event. The Overwater Suite faces west across the lagoon to Mount Otemanu; at dawn the sun rises behind you and lights the side of the peak that you are looking at.
  • A northern city at dawn. Atelier is the odd one out: no mist and no jungle, but a harbour city whose morning stretches out slowly at 55 degrees north, and which in summer is already light before four.

When the morning actually starts

Times below are local clock time on the 15th of each month, computed with the NOAA solar equations for each place's coordinates and a flat horizon — the same method as the table in Golden Hour. "First light" is civil dawn, when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon and the sky is bright enough to see without a lamp. In the gorge at Ubud and in the hills of Chiang Mai and Santa Teresa, the sun itself reaches you later than the sunrise figure, because the terrain is the horizon; at sea, the figure is what you will see.

What the table means for your dates

  • Near the equator, one alarm works for the whole stay. In Ubud, the Maldives, Bora Bora and Santa Teresa sunrise moves by well under an hour over the year. Learn the time on your first morning and it holds until you leave.
  • Chiang Mai's mornings have a season. The mist over the hills belongs to the cool months; from February the burning season sets in, and by March smoke is often trapped in the valleys. That is why we list The Teak House for November to February and not for spring.
  • Copenhagen rewards the opposite seasons for opposite reasons. In January sunrise is around half past eight, so you see it without trying — over breakfast. In July it is before five, and the harbour is yours if you are out on a house bicycle at six.
  • Dawn in the tropics is a short show. With barely twenty minutes from first light to sunrise, the coffee should already be in your hand when the sky starts to change. There is no slow build to wait for.
If the evening is more your hour, Golden Hour is this collection's twin, with sunset times for six stays chosen for the end of the day. For the houses in the gorge and the hills, see Jungle Villas; for the lagoon mornings, Overwater Escapes.

Common questions

Which stays are in First Light?

This collection currently holds 6 stays: Canopy Villa, The Teak House, The Overwater Suite, The Rainforest House, Atelier, The Lagoon Villa. Every one is picked by hand — we would rather show you three places worth booking than thirty that fill a page.

What do stays in First Light cost?

Nightly rates in this collection start at around €210 and reach about €1,240, depending on the house, the season and the room. Those are orientation figures rather than live rates — check dates with our booking partner for what you would actually pay.

Who is First Light for?

First Light is Deserved's shortlist for the half hour before a place wakes up — when the mist still sits in the valley, the pools are empty and the terrace belongs to you and one cup of coffee. Every stay in this edit is chosen for what it looks like at dawn, not at noon.

What time is sunrise in the Maldives?

Almost the same time all year. In the Baa Atoll the sun rises at about 06:21 local time on 15 January, 06:01 on 15 April, 06:02 on 15 July and 05:53 on 15 October — figures computed with the NOAA solar equations for a flat sea horizon, which is exactly what an atoll gives you. The first light in the sky comes only about 21 to 23 minutes earlier, so set the alarm for half past five, not five.

Why does dawn last so much longer in Copenhagen than in the tropics?

Because at 55 degrees north the sun climbs out of the horizon at a shallow angle instead of rising almost straight up. From first light (the sun 6 degrees below the horizon) to sunrise takes about 37 to 56 minutes in Copenhagen depending on the month, against roughly 21 to 24 minutes at every tropical stay in this edit. The soft, low-angle window after sunrise is longer too — over an hour and a half in January and July. In July that also means sunrise at about 04:45, so the city's quiet hour belongs to whoever is up very early.

Is Chiang Mai good for sunrise in March and April?

Usually not. Northern Thailand has a burning season: NASA satellite data show fire detections building through February, peaking in March and fading by May, and the mountains around Chiang Mai trap the smoke in the valleys. The sun then rises as a dull orange disc in a grey sky, and the view of layered hills disappears. The misty mornings this edit is about belong to the cool season, which is why The Teak House is listed for November to February.

Does the sun rise over the sea in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica?

No. Santa Teresa lies on the Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula and looks west, so the sea is where the sun sets. In the morning the sun comes up behind the forested hills, and the light reaches the treetops before it reaches the beach. That is the point of a house built into the hillside: you are at canopy height when the forest wakes, while the shore below is still in shade.
